Wire-Free (RTK / Vision Navigation)
How it works: An RTK base station (or onboard vision cameras, or both) lets the mower map boundaries by walking the perimeter once in the app — no cable buried underground.
Pros:
- Much faster setup — often 20-30 minutes vs. a full day of trenching and burying wire
- Easier to adjust zones later (no digging up cable to change a boundary)
- Better suited to complex, irregular layouts with multiple zones
Cons:
- Generally more expensive than comparable wired models
- RTK accuracy can be affected by nearby structures or dense tree cover blocking satellite signal (vision-based systems help offset this)
- Slightly newer technology category overall — less multi-generation reliability history than wired systems in some brands
Wired Boundary
How it works: A physical low-voltage wire is buried or pinned along the lawn’s perimeter; the mower detects the wire’s signal to know where to stop.
Pros:
- Typically lower cost for the same coverage tier
- Extremely reliable boundary detection — no signal interference concerns
- Long track record — this is the older, more established technology
Cons:
- Installation is genuinely more work — trenching or pinning wire around every bed, path, and obstacle
- Changing your yard’s layout later means re-running wire
- Less convenient for adding or adjusting zones over time

Is wire-free mowing accurate enough to trust near a pool or drop-off? Modern RTK+vision systems are generally reliable, but for any boundary where a mistake is dangerous (pools, drop-offs, steps), check the specific model’s rated accuracy and consider a physical barrier as backup regardless of navigation type.
